3 Keys From Sam Demma On Taking Responsibility, Keeping Promises, and Consistent Action

Updated: Apr 20

One of my favourite things about going to University was the opportunity it gave me to put myself around like-minded individuals, and immerse in the areas that interested me the most.

When I was still finding my way, one of the things I did to help streamline that process was co-founding an entrepreneurship education website - in which I’d interview up and coming entrepreneurs in Toronto, Waterloo, and across Ontario, and feature their stories on what it’s like to run a business.

I interviewed about 50 entrepreneurs, and one of the most passion-driven businesses I came across was PickWaste. Co-founded by Sam Demma and Dillon Mendes, whom I interviewed.

They both live by a simple principle but powerful principle, which I love - “small consistent actions”.

This aligns with one of my favorite principles of all time - known as ‘the slight edge’ in which - simple daily disciplines, done consistently over long periods of time - lead to big results.

Today’s feature is Top-Rated Youth Motivational Speaker, Sam Demma.

Sam is an official TedX Speaker, co-founder of PickWaste (featured on CBC, CTV, CityNews, and more), founder of The High Performing Student, and KeyNote Speaker of Sam Demma Enterprises (having completed over 150+ events since 2017).

Introducing Sam Demma:

Sam embodies “the slight edge” - and his impressive track record shows the upside it can have, when implemented early in one’s life, and when it is stuck too with discipline and consistency.

What does that take exactly? It takes a strong purpose. It takes a strong ‘why’ to get up each morning and do the things you need to do.

Sam has been changing young people’s lives all over Canada - through his powerful message, his charismatic speaking ability, and his growing reputation in professional speaking circles.

By helping students answer the question “Can I make a difference?” through his keynotes - he creates a massive impact that improves lives at an increasing rate.

This is a simple yet powerful question, that can mean many things to many different people, but in all cases - there is massive upside in answering that very question.

It’s been so great to see how much Sam has grown since I first came across PickWaste in my University years - and I thought he’d be a perfect feature for Purpose & Action.

He’s dedicated to helping the young people of today make break-throughs and make a difference (on both a micro and macro scale) - so, without further ado, here are 3 principles from Sam Demma.

3 Keys From Sam Demma:

Q: What was the one decision you made, that started your ‘upward spiral’ of finding your path in life?

It was a decision to take responsibility for all the results in my life - negative and positive.

I believe that the only way someone can change is to take full responsibility because if you blame others or anything outside of yourself for where you currently are in your life, it becomes impossible to change.

Taking responsibility has to be one of the most important steps in the process of finding your way, and succeeding in whatever it is that you do.

Q: What principles do you live by that keeps you on your path?

Always keep promises. Promises to yourself and promises to other people.

Don't whine or complain for longer than 15 minutes.

When you aren't getting the result you want, ask yourself “what are you choosing to believe in this situation?”.

Treat others better than you want to be treated.

Underpromise, overdeliver.

You must fill up your cup first - exercise, reading, meditation, nutrition - before you strive to help others.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a young person of today’s world who may be lost, or may be on the wrong path, but is actively looking to find their way and make something of themselves?

Treat your life like a buffet.

When you go to a buffet you walk around and take a little bit of everything they have to offer.

You then taste each food and make a decision what you want more of and what you won't take again.

It's the same thing with figuring out what you want to do with your life.

Try as many things as possible. Keep doing what you enjoy, and forget the rest.
